What to Expect

Discovery Mahjong is a relaxed, social introduction, not a full lesson. In one session, you'll get:

  • A quick history of American Mahjong and how it differs from other Mahjong variants
  • A hands-on tour of the tiles: suits, honors, and what everything means
  • A curated sample game designed around the wine tasting experience, easy to follow with a glass in hand, so you see exactly how a hand comes together

No experience, no equipment, and no pressure to remember everything. It's designed to answer the question "is this something I'd enjoy?" before you commit to more.

What Comes Next

Enjoyed your Discovery session and ready to actually learn to play? Mahjong 101 is the full beginner course, held weekly at PureGreen Portland, that takes you from the basics to playing with confidence. From there, Weekly Open Play is where you'll build real experience with other Portland players.

Where It's Held

These sessions take place at Corcilla Cellars, 721 Main St, Oregon City, OR 97045, a relaxed wine bar setting that's perfect for a low-key first look at the game. Space is limited for each date, so reserve your spot ahead of time.
