I'm the founder of Gracey Tile Club PDX, where I help people across the Portland metro discover the joy of American Mahjong through beginner lessons, weekly Open Play, private events, and a growing community of players.
I created Gracey Tile Club because Mahjong is about so much more than a game. It's about building confidence, creating friendships, and finding a place where you belong. Whether you're sitting down for your very first lesson or joining a table of seasoned players, my goal is to help you learn with confidence in a fun, beautiful, and welcoming environment.
I teach the official National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules and card, with a structured approach that helps beginners quickly recognize patterns, build strategy, and feel at home at the table. I took a Mahjong 101 class with Karen and it was awesome! She taught us how to identify tiles, set up the board, and gave us a 2026 Mahjong card with the hands we could use to win. While the game seems daunting, Karen made it easy and fun to learn. I'll definitely be joining for future classes and events.

Not at all. Discovery Mahjong and Mahjong 101 are built for complete beginners. No experience required, just you.
Discovery is a relaxed, one-session intro to what American Mahjong is: history, the tiles, and a sample game. Mahjong 101 is the full beginner course that teaches you everything you need to play a real game confidently.
You don't need to bring anything to play. I provide the tiles, mats, racks, and everything else needed for American Mahjong. Just bring your NMJL card if you already have one. If not, I'll have cards you can borrow during class, plus cards available to purchase if you'd like your own to take home.
Yes! Private parties are $300 for a table of four, plus $25 for each additional player, and are hosted on weekends. Send me your preferred date and I'll confirm availability before we finalize the details. Perfect for birthdays, girls' nights, and team gatherings across Portland & SW Washington.
Mahjong 101 meets Thursdays at PureGreen Portland, and weekly open play is at the Eastmoreland Golf Course Bar & Grill, both in SE Portland. Private events travel across the greater Portland metro, including Sellwood-Moreland, Milwaukie, Clackamas, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Beaverton, and Hillsboro, plus SW Washington.
